Wheelchair accessible Palma is easier than a medieval old town suggests. The city runs an assisted bathing service on six urban beaches, and the two big monuments in the centre, the cathedral and the Palau de l'Almudaina, can be visited with reduced mobility. Where things fall down is underground and up high: caves, rooftops and boats that board across the sand.

This guide separates what the venue itself declares accessible from what is not confirmed. Where something is unclear, we tell you who to ask.

Accessible beaches in Palma de Mallorca with assisted bathing

Palma City Council runs six assisted bathing points: Cala Major, Can Pere Antoni, Ciutat Jardí, Cala Estància and two at Platja de Palma, at balnearios (beach stations) 7 and 15. Note: not at balneario 6, the famous German party spot.

Each point has a shaded area, adapted showers and toilets, and support equipment: wheelchairs, amphibious chairs for getting into the water and crutches. Staff help with transfers and go into the water with the bather. You can go alone or with companions. The list and hours are on visitpalma.com.

Period Usual hours
Late March – April 11:00–17:00
May 11:00–18:30
June 10:00–19:00
July and August 10:00–19:30
September 10:00–19:00
October 10:30–17:00

The service runs until 31 October, and October is a good month: the sea is still mild and the beaches are quiet. What the council does not publish is whether you need to book or whether there is a charge; go to the point early in the day and ask there.

Which to choose and how to get there

  • Can Pere Antoni: the closest to the cathedral, a city beach east of the old town near Portixol, along the Parc de la Mar promenade. Several EMT lines stop next to it, at the Palau de Congressos.
  • Ciutat Jardí: Blue Flag, lifeguards and assisted bathing, about 20–25 minutes on EMT line 35 from Plaça de la Reina. It ticks the most boxes.
  • Cala Estància: also Blue Flag; lines 35, 32 and A2.
  • Platja de Palma, balnearios 7 and 15: line 25 leaves from the cathedral and runs the whole length of the promenade. Number 7 is next to number 6 and quieter in the morning; number 15 is near Palma Aquarium, which line 35 also serves.
  • Cala Major: Blue Flag, to the west, on line 4, next to the Fundació Miró.

Wheelchair accessible sights in Palma

These are the places whose accessibility the operator itself confirms:

Place What is accessible Bear in mind
Cathedral and Museu d'Art Sacre the visit and the museum not the terraces; no wheelchairs lent
Palau de l'Almudaina access for reduced mobility lends manual wheelchairs; closed on Mondays
Casal Solleric (Passeig del Born 27) ground floor, main floor and courtyard adapted toilets on the main floor; free
Pueblo Español the whole site, according to the operator €12, open daily 10:00–18:00
Rafa Nadal Museum (Manacor) the whole museum the guided Academy tour involves stairs
Tablao Flamenco Alma accessible venue shows at 17:30, 19:30 and 21:30
City Sightseeing hop-on hop-off bus adapted buses 19 stops, 10:00 to 17:30

The cathedral recommends arriving without large bags (there is no left-luggage) and respecting the dress code: shoulders covered and nothing shorter than mid-thigh.

The same goes for the Almudaina, and better: free entry all day with a disability rating of 33% or more, plus one companion, showing the document at the desk. The platforms do not apply this free entry.

What is not accessible (and alternatives)

Cons

  • Cathedral terraces: stairs, over-9s only
  • Coves de Gènova: stairs and narrow passages
  • Hammam Al Ándalus: steps down to the pools and stairs to the massage area
  • Caves of Drach: steps with handrails; no pushchairs or wheelchairs
  • Coves dels Hams: lots of steps, no pushchairs or wheelchairs

At Drach, the car park has reserved spaces and the bar, shop and adapted toilets are reached by ramps, but the cave itself is not accessible. Next to the Hams caves, Dinosaurland is accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Bellver Castle is a halfway case. On foot from El Terreno there are 463 steps, but you can drive or take a taxi up Calle Camilo José Cela to the castle car park, where the ticket desk is. Whether the circular two-storey interior can be toured step-free is not confirmed: call ahead on 971 735 065. The sightseeing bus also stops at the castle (stop 10).

Palma Aquarium does not publish accessibility information. Ask before you go.

Accessible boats on the Bay of Palma

This is the weak spot. Life & Sea boats in S'Arenal board across the beach and are not adapted, and the Barca Samba does not take wheelchairs. For the Marco Polo city boat (Mallorca City Boat), which leaves from the Escala Real near the Llotja, the operator itself gives conflicting answers: some pages say it is accessible and others say it is not. Ask on WhatsApp at +34 673 635 165 before booking.

If you are thinking of Cabrera, the Mar Cabrera boat is adapted, but in the national park only the harbour area is accessible. For other boat trips, see the boat trips guide and always ask the operator before paying.

Getting around Palma with reduced mobility

Sightseeing bus. It is the easiest way to link the cathedral, Pueblo Español and Bellver without hills: adapted buses, audio in eight languages and free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Details in Palma hop-on hop-off bus.

All three platforms sell the same product from the only operator, City Sightseeing, at the same starting price.

City buses (EMT). EMT is renewing its fleet with low-floor electric buses, some with external speakers for blind or deaf passengers. A single ticket costs €2 in cash, or less with a contactless bank card; the A1 airport bus costs €5.

Adapted taxi. AENA's official list gives one number for adapted taxis: +34 971 703 529. Ask for a "eurotaxi" or "taxi adaptado" and book ahead, especially for the airport. More options in airport transfers.

Car. The old town has 12 camera-controlled ACIRE zones; holders of a disabled parking card are among those exempt. Confirm the paperwork with the city council (Mobipalma) or your hotel before driving in, because the fine arrives by camera.
