A buggy tour in Mallorca "from Palma" does not start in Palma: it starts in Son Oms, a rural area hard against the airport, and the route heads towards Llucmajor and Puig de Randa. It is a morning of dirt tracks, back roads and views over the Pla, the island's central plain. What catches people out is the small print: the buggy driver must be 21, the licence must be the original card and the price is per buggy, not per person. Here is what is really on offer, what it costs and which to choose for your age and your group.

Buggy tours in Mallorca from Palma: who runs them and where they go

"Buggy Tour Mallorca" is just the name of a listing on the booking platforms, not a place to visit. Behind it is Adventure Tours Mallorca S.L., based on Carrer de Can Calafat in Son Oms (Sant Jordi), next to Palma airport. Its buggies are two- and four-seater Polaris RZR 1000s with automatic gearbox and power steering, so you need no previous experience with this kind of vehicle.

The classic outing lasts about 3 hours. It starts with a good half hour on unpaved track from Sant Jordi and continues on back roads towards Llucmajor. The highlight is the climb up Puig de Randa (542 m), Mallorca's "holy mountain", with a half-hour stop at the viewpoint.

Guide, fuel, third-party insurance and walkie-talkies for driving in convoy are included. The buggies have seat belts, so no helmet is used. Guides speak German, Spanish and English; if you want a French-speaking guide, see the Santa Ponça quad below. The operator's terms are on its website, buggy-mallorca.com.

Buggy price: per vehicle, not per person

The two-seater buggy costs €240 and the four-seater €300. That price covers the whole vehicle with one or two people (or up to four in the big one), so a couple pays the same as someone on their own, and four friends in the big buggy pay €75 each. For a group it is one of the more reasonable motor activities on the island; for a solo traveller, one of the most expensive.

On GetYourGuide the same format is listed from €240 with more than a thousand reviews and a 4.7 rating. On Tiqets there is a buggy trip with a swim stop from €110, with no reviews yet: before paying, check whether that price is per person or per vehicle, and where it leaves from.

Three points in the contract worth reading first:

  • €1,500 excess if you damage the buggy. You can reduce it to zero for €20 per driver. On dirt tracks, it is worth it.
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before with the operator, and a full refund if it is called off for bad weather.
  • If you book on GetYourGuide with "reserve now, pay later", your card is charged 72 hours before the activity, not on the day.

Quad bike tours in Palma de Mallorca: El Arenal and Santa Ponça

If you are between 18 and 20, the buggy is not for you, but a quad is. Near Palma there are two bases with guided tours (not free hourly hire, which we have not found in the area):

From El Arenal (Playa de Palma). Quads & Mini Bikes Mallorca, on Carrer de Marbella, runs a 3 h 30 tour from El Arenal towards Llucmajor, with photo stops in Randa and Algaida, finishing at Son Veri on the coast with snorkelling and rock jumping. Helmet, guide, drinks, fuel, snorkelling gear and insurance are included. Its reference price is around €95 per quad. Wear your swimsuit.

From Santa Ponça (Calvià). Mallor'Quad runs a route along the west coast (meet at 10:30, depart 11:00) and a sunset tour (16:30 or 17:00), both about 3 h 30. Price on its website: €139 for a quad with one rider and €174 for two. Fuel, helmet, parking, third-party insurance and a snorkel mask are included; the excess goes up to €1,500. Full refund if you cancel 48 hours ahead. It is the only one on this list with French-speaking guides, as well as Spanish and English (mallorquad.com).

On GetYourGuide you will find more quads, with very different prices depending on the format: the quad tour with cliff jumping and snorkelling from €65 (4.7 with more than 3,000 reviews), the Magaluf tour of viewpoints and coves from €56, or an hour around Andratx from €59. Always check whether the price is per person or per quad: on operators' own websites it is usually per vehicle.

Age, licence and passengers: the rules that leave you on the ground

This is where most bookings go wrong. Operators check your licence at the base, and if you do not meet the rules, you do not drive.

Buggy (Son Oms) Quad (El Arenal) Quad (Santa Ponça)
Driver's age 21 18 18
Licence Original category B Full category B, physical card Category B, no provisional licences
Passengers front 12 years and 135 cm; back from 4 from 7 with parental consent from 7 years and 1.30 m
  • Bring the physical licence card. Photos, photocopies and provisional licences are refused. For the buggy they accept your country's official digital licence app; if your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, you also need an International Driving Permit.
  • Pregnant women: not allowed on the buggy.
  • Road-legal vehicles like these are driven on a car licence (category B). Spain's general licence rules are in the Reglamento General de Conductores (General Drivers' Regulations).

How to get to the base from Palma

None of these tours picks up in central Palma by default, so plan the journey:

Getting there from the centre

  1. Buggy at Son Oms: taxi from Palma or the airport; it is in the airport area, on Carrer de Can Calafat. Give the driver the exact address, not "the airport".
  2. Quad at El Arenal: EMT line 25 runs from the cathedral to Platja de Palma; ask the operator for the nearest stop to the meeting point.
  3. Quad at Santa Ponça: the TIB 103 from Palma is the fast option, about 25 minutes; the 106 stops at Santa Ponça beach.
  4. Arrive 15 minutes early with your licence in hand: paperwork and the safety briefing happen before you set off.

Free-flow driving time calculated with OSRM on OpenStreetMap. In summer and at rush hour allow 20–30 % more, plus time to park.

If you are staying in Palmanova or Magaluf, Santa Ponça is next door; from Playa de Palma, Son Oms and El Arenal are a short hop. The Alcúdia, Cala Ratjada or Cala Millor tours you will see on the platforms are for people staying in the north or east: from Palma you face more than an hour on the road each way.

Buggy or quad: which to choose

Buggy Quad
Minimum driver age 21 18
Price per vehicle: ideal for 2 or 4 per quad: better if you ride solo
Driving steering wheel, seat belt, automatic handlebars, helmet, more physical
Children in the back from 4 (four-seater) passengers from 7
Extra Puig de Randa viewpoint swim at Son Veri (El Arenal) or sunset (Santa Ponça)

The honest summary: as a couple or a group of four, the Son Oms buggy. If you are young, on your own or want to finish with a swim, the quad. With small children, the four-seater buggy is the only option that takes them in the back seat.

Tips before you book

  • Check the start time and how long it takes you to get there: with an afternoon flight, the Son Oms buggy fits well on your last day because it is next to the airport, but leave time to return a hire car or collect luggage.
  • In summer, go in the afternoon: the Santa Ponça sunset quad avoids the fierce midday sun.
  • Clothes you do not mind getting dirty, sunglasses and something for your hair: these are dirt tracks.
  • Zero-excess cover: if it is your first time driving a buggy, the €20 to remove the buggy excess is money well spent.
  • Stag and hen parties: the four-seater buggy is a classic group plan. If you are organising one, also read the stag and hen parties in Mallorca guide.

If you fancy the sea more than the land, see jet skis and speedboats or parasailing and water sports. For gentler wheels around the city there is bike, segway and scooter in Palma, and if big engines are your thing, read what is really on offer in supercar driving in Mallorca. Everything else you can do is in the things to do in Palma guide.

Can you drive a buggy in Mallorca without a licence?

No. The driver needs an original category B licence and, for the Son Oms buggy, must be 21. Without a licence you can only ride as a passenger. For children there is a kids' buggy course from age 8 and 20-minute kids' buggies.

How much does a buggy tour in Palma de Mallorca cost?

€240 for the two-seater and €300 for the four-seater, per vehicle, for about 3 hours. With four people in the big one it works out at €75 each.

Where do Palma buggy tours start?

In Son Oms, in the Sant Jordi area next to the airport, not in the centre. The transfer is not included: most people take a taxi.

How old do you have to be to drive a quad in Mallorca?

18, with a full, physical category B licence, both in El Arenal and in Santa Ponça. Passengers from age 7.

Can I take children on the buggy?

Yes, in the four-seater: in the back from age 4; in the front from 12 years and 1.35 m.

Are there quad tours with a French-speaking guide near Palma?

Yes: Mallor'Quad in Santa Ponça has guides in French, Spanish and English. The Son Oms buggy works in German, Spanish and English.
