Things to do in Palma when it rains: indoor plans that really are open

If it rains in Palma, the day is saved by the aquarium (open 365 days a year), the cathedral from Monday to Saturday and a route of free or almost-free museums. What really complicates things is rain on a Sunday or a Monday: here is what opens on each day.

Knowing what to do in Palma when it rains is mostly a question of the calendar. There are plenty of indoor plans (cathedral, royal palace, aquarium, museums, hammam), but each one closes on a different day. A rainy Tuesday sorts itself out; a rainy Sunday takes some thought.

The good news: it does not rain much in Palma, and when it does it comes in short spells. Even in October, the wettest month, it rains roughly one day in four or five. A grey day rarely spoils a week's holiday.

How much it rains in Palma de Mallorca, and when

According to AEMET's climate normals for the Palma port station, the city gets about 53 rainy days a year. July is almost dry (0.7 days) and umbrella season runs from October to April: October 6.7 days, November 6.4, December 6.5, January 5.8. September is the stormiest month, so a late-summer afternoon downpour is not unusual either.

In October the sea is still around 22 °C, so if it clears up the beach is back on. But after heavy rain, Cala Major, Can Pere Antoni and Ciutat Jardí can be closed to swimming for a day or two because of sewer overflows. If you see a red flag, head for Illetes, Cala Comtesa or Platja de Palma. All the options are in the Palma beaches guide.

Cathedral and Almudaina: the classic rainy-day plan

Palma Cathedral is the best shelter on a weekday: a nave about 44 metres high, Gaudí's alterations and Miquel Barceló's ceramic chapel. The official €10 ticket includes the Museu d'Art Sacre (MASM), which almost everyone skips and which is exactly what a rainy day calls for. The terraces (€25) are not a good idea on a wet roof: if it is raining, stay downstairs.

Watch the hours: there are no tourist visits on Sundays, and on Saturdays it closes at 14:15. If it rains on a Saturday afternoon, the cathedral is no longer an option. The €10 price is the one the cathedral itself publishes; confirm it on catedraldemallorca.org before you go.

Right opposite is the Palau de l'Almudaina, the royal palace: €8 (€5 reduced), closed on Mondays, 10:00 to 18:00 in the winter season. It is free on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons, but only for EU and Ibero-American citizens and EU residents with ID. Bring your physical ID card or passport.

Palma Aquarium: the rainy-day plan open 365 days a year

Palma Aquarium is the safe bet for any day and time: it opens every day of the year from 09:30 to 18:30, last entry 17:00. It is at Platja de Palma; from the cathedral, EMT line 35 leaves from Plaça de la Reina and ends at the door.

Not everything is under cover: the Mediterranean gardens are outdoors. In the rain, concentrate on the Jungle zone, the Big Blue tank (8.5 metres deep, one of the deepest shark tanks in Europe) and the indoor Ocean Play playground, open from 11:30 to 17:00. Allow at least two hours.

The price is the same through all three channels: €30.50 adult and €19.50 child aged 3 to 12. The trick is the time: until 31 October, tickets for after 14:00 have a 15% discount on the official website (from €26). Arrive before 15:00 to get two full hours.

Free or cheap museums for a rainy afternoon

Palma has a museum route that costs very little if you know the right days.

  • Museu Fundación Juan March (C/ Sant Miquel 11): 20th-century Spanish art, free entry, Monday to Friday 10:00 to 18:30 and Saturday 10:30 to 14:00. It is one of the few museums that opens on Mondays. Closed on Sundays and public holidays. Hours at march.es.
  • Es Baluard (Plaça de la Porta de Santa Catalina 10): contemporary art inside the Renaissance bastion. €8, but on Fridays you pay what you wish. From the top you see the whole bay, even when it is grey.
  • Fundació Miró (Cala Major): €10, free for under-16s, on Saturdays from 15:00 and on the first Sunday of every month. EMT line 4 drops you nearby.
  • Casal Solleric (Passeig del Born 27): an 18th-century palace with contemporary art exhibitions, free, open until 20:00 Tuesday to Saturday.
  • CaixaForum (Plaça de Weyler 3): in the former Modernista Gran Hotel; free for under-16s and CaixaBank customers (confirm hours and price at the desk).
  • Palau March (C/ Palau Reial 18, next to the cathedral): sculptures by Moore, Chillida and Rodin and a nativity scene of almost 2,000 pieces; Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 17:30.

Palma's cheapest rainy afternoon: Juan March (free) in the morning, Es Baluard on a Friday paying what you wish and, if it is a Wednesday, an original-version film at CineCiutat (C/ Emperadriu Eugènia 6) for €4.30. It is a non-profit cinema showing films in their original language with Spanish subtitles; a standard ticket costs €7.80, and the offers do not apply on public holidays or the day before. Rainy Sunday in Palma: what opens and what doesn't

Sunday is the trap. If it rains, forget these:

Cons

  • Cathedral: no tourist visits (Mass only)
  • Museu Fundación Juan March and Palau March
  • Porto Pi shopping centre and Mercat de l'Olivar
  • FAN Mallorca shops (except on a few designated Sundays)

And note these, which do open:

Pros

  • Palma Aquarium, all day
  • Es Baluard and Fundació Miró, 10:00 to 15:00 (the Miró free on the first Sunday)
  • Palau de l'Almudaina (it closes on Monday, not Sunday)
  • Casal Solleric, 11:00 to 14:30
  • Coves de Gènova, CineCiutat, and the cinema and restaurants at FAN Mallorca

If you want to see inside the cathedral on a Sunday, you can attend Mass (10:30 or 12:00) dressed appropriately, without wandering around or taking photos during the service. FAN Mallorca publishes its Sunday openings at fanmallorca.com; EMT lines 18, 23 and 34, among others, stop at the door.

Rainy Monday: what closes in Palma

On Mondays the Almudaina, Bellver, Es Baluard, the Miró and Casal Solleric are closed. But the plan is still good: the cathedral opens, the Juan March opens and is free, the Palau March opens, and so do the aquarium, the Coves de Gènova and CaixaForum. Build Monday around the cathedral and the Palau March, which are next door to each other, and keep the Juan March for after lunch.

Hammam, Gènova caves and flamenco: indoor plans with a ticket

Hammam Al Ándalus (C/ Costa i Llobera 20, next to El Corte Inglés) is a modern spa, not the Banys Àrabs monument. Sessions last 90 minutes, start every two hours between 10:00 and 22:00, and swimwear is compulsory. It fills up on rainy days: book two or three days ahead, and remember that if you cancel with less than 48 hours' notice you lose 100%.

Coves de Gènova is the only show cave within Palma's municipal boundary: 36 metres deep, a visit of about 25 minutes with an audio guide on your phone (bring headphones) and €12 (€7 children). It is small, nothing like Drach, but it rescues a morning.

By train or bus from Palma: day trips that survive the rain

Caves of Drach (Porto Cristo). According to the caves themselves, rain does not affect the visit. Tickets cost €18.50 online or €19.50 at the desk, with a fixed time slot and no refunds; a concert of about 10 minutes on the lake, then you cross by boat or over a bridge. From the Estació Intermodal at Plaça d'Espanya, TIB bus 401 takes about 1 h 15 min. Everything in the Caves of Drach guide.

Rafa Nadal Museum (Manacor). A renovated museum, every day from 10:00 to 18:30, from €20 (€35 with a guided tour of the Academy). Bookings cannot be cancelled. It is on the Cales de Mallorca road on the outskirts of Manacor: TIB 401 or the SFM train gets you to the town, and from there you need a taxi. Combine it with Drach, about 12 km away.

The train from Palma. SFM trains to Inca, Sa Pobla and Manacor leave from the Estació Intermodal, and you can pay with a contactless bank card. There is no train to Alcúdia: TIB bus 302 goes there. Palma's other train is the historic Sóller train, with its own station next to Plaça d'Espanya: seven departures a day from 10:10, €23 single and €30 return. Its appeal is the mountain scenery, so under a low sky it loses a lot. You can change the date and time until 09:00 on the same day: if you wake up to rain, move it.
