A walking tour of Palma nearly always covers the same ground: the cathedral and the Almudaina from outside, Plaça de Cort, Santa Eulàlia, Sant Francesc, the old Jewish quarter (the Call), a noble courtyard or two and Plaça Major. What changes is the format: the tip-based free tour, the paid tour with cathedral entry, the evening tour, the tapas tour or the private one.

My quick summary: for a first lap that helps you understand the city, the morning free tour is the best value. If you want to go inside the cathedral with someone explaining it, pay for a tour that includes it and avoid Sunday. And if you've already seen the centre by day, the evening tour shows you a different Palma, with its legends as the thread.

Free walking tour Palma de Mallorca: how it works

"Free" doesn't mean free: there's no set price and at the end you pay the guide what you think is fair. GuruWalk, the platform where most are booked, suggests between €15 and €50 per person. If the guide was good, a fair amount for two hours is nearer the middle of that range than the bottom.

Several guides and groups in Palma work this way (Mallorca Free Tour, Destino Mallorca, Otra Mirada Palma, Los 7 secretos and independent guides). Together they average 4.77 out of 5 from around 4,700 reviews. There are departures every day between 10:00 and 18:00, morning and afternoon, in Spanish and English and a few in German or Dutch. They last between 1.5 and 3 hours; most, 2.

The best known is Mallorca Free Tour's "Free Tour Palma Old Town": it starts at Parc de la Mar, in front of the tourist office (C/ del Moll 3), and the guide carries an orange umbrella. It takes in Plaça Major, the modernista buildings of Plaça del Mercat, Sant Nicolau, the town hall, Santa Eulàlia, Sant Francesc, the Call, the Santa Clara convent and finishes at the cathedral and the city walls, with the legends of the Drac de na Coca and the Lady of the Cathedral. It scores 4.82 out of 5 from almost a thousand reviews. The listing is on GuruWalk. Other guides meet in Plaça d'Espanya, by the statue of Jaume I, or in Plaça Major: check your booking carefully.

Paid tours have a fixed price, a more controlled group size and, in some cases, cathedral entry. These are the most booked on GetYourGuide ("from" prices, as of today):

The official Visit Palma directory also lists local operators: Call & Ride Mallorca runs a 3-hour "Tour of Old Town" for €35 (10:30, in English and Spanish, from Plaça del Rosari 4); Segway Palma tours the old town in 1 h 15 for €40 (over-12s, between 40 and 120 kg); and Mallorca Premium Tours offers a private guide for €180 per group of 1 to 15 people. The full list, with contact details, is on visitpalma.com.

Evening walking tour of Palma

At night the old town empties of groups and the narrow streets change character. The atmospheric evening tour of the old town is the most booked: 2 hours, from €39, 4.8 out of 5 from more than 700 reviews. It suits you if you arrive in the afternoon or have already seen the centre by day.

If you're after a free evening tour, GuruWalk has afternoon departures, but they start at 18:00 at the latest. For something different later in the day:

  • Jewish quarter with Tomir Tourist Guides: Tuesdays at 17:30 from Plaça de Cort, in Spanish or Mallorcan.
  • Cathedral terraces at sunset: a guided visit in summer only, from about 19:00 to 20:30, for €30, in Spanish, Catalan or English. Details in the cathedral guide.
  • Pekes Mallorca for children: Fridays and Saturdays at 17:00 (see below).

To carry on the night after the tour, there are ideas in Palma nightlife and, if you're travelling as a couple, in Palma for couples.

Type of tour What it covers Price
Classic free tour Plaça Major, Cort, Santa Eulàlia, Sant Francesc, the Call, cathedral and walls (outside) tip
Paid tour with cathedral the same plus a guided visit inside La Seu from €28
Courtyards and corners noble courtyards such as Can Vivot or Can Oleza, back lanes varies by operator
Jewish quarter (Call) the old Jewish quarter; Jewish Majorca runs 2-, 4- or 6-hour routes for groups of up to 12, ages 8 and up price per group
Tapas old town with food stops from €39
Bike Palma on Bike, 2.5 h, at 10:30 and 15:30 €40 (€35 for 2+)
Segway old town in 1 h 15 €40

On food: the foodie walking tour of the old town lasts 3 hours from €65, and the walking tour with local tasting combines a stroll and tastings from €39. More options in the guide to tapas and local food.

What hardly any tour shows you

  • La Llotja is usually seen from outside: it's a Balearic government exhibition hall and only opens when there's a show on (and then it's free).
  • Santa Catalina isn't on the classic routes. It's the old fishermen's quarter beside Es Baluard, now a market and bar district; the food tours go there.
  • Can Vivot, the most famous baroque courtyard, is a private house. Getting in costs €12 on its own guided visit (Tuesday to Saturday, booking required), separate from any tour.
  • Ramon Llull's tomb, in Sant Francesc, is left out of most routes.

Groups of 20 at most: Palma's bylaw

Palma has a civic bylaw that caps guided groups at 20 people and bans megaphones, with fines of €750. In practice groups are more manageable than in other cities and you'll hear the guide without a loudspeaker. It also tells you something when choosing: if an operator brags about huge groups in the old town, be wary.

The same bylaw fines drinking alcohol in the street (€750 to €1,500), so save the beer for a terrace after the tour.

When you're better off on your own

A tour isn't always worth it. If you're interested in the monuments more than the stories, the old town is easy to walk with a map: everything is a few minutes apart. The full route, stop by stop, is in the guide to the Arab Baths and old town.

The official €10 price is the one published by the cathedral itself; the city's tourism directory has shown it at €11, so confirm it there. A useful detail: Spiritual Mallorca's SM Card (€18, valid 12 months) gets you into six diocesan monuments, including the cathedral, the Sant Francesc cloister (€6 on its own) and the Santa Eulàlia terraces (€6, April to October). If you plan to see all three, it works out cheaper.

With children, pushchairs and reduced mobility

Pekes Mallorca runs a family tour of corsairs, pirates and sailors with an official guide: 2 hours, Fridays 17:00–19:00 and Saturdays 11:00–13:00 and 17:00–19:00, from the church of Santa Creu. You pay what you decide at the end. It's the most child-focused option in the official directory; more ideas in Palma with kids.

The old town is pedestrianised, flat or gently sloping, but there are steps. Mallorca Free Tour's free tour accepts pushchairs, though it warns of stairs in the first part. The Segway requires a minimum age of 12. If someone in your group uses a wheelchair, read the accessible Palma guide before booking.

How to book and cancel

  • Free tours: book free of charge on the platform; cancel if you won't make it.
  • GetYourGuide: free cancellation, as a general rule, up to 24 hours before. With "reserve now, pay later" your card is charged 72 hours before the activity, not on the day.
  • Local operators in the Visit Palma directory: book directly with them, by phone or WhatsApp; ask about their cancellation terms.
  • Official cathedral ticket: cannot be changed or refunded once confirmed.
