Plaza de España in Palma and Cap Rocat: bus station, Sóller train and fortress

Plaza de España in Palma isn't the main square: it's the island's big transport hub, with the Intermodal station underneath and the Sóller train next door. Cap Rocat, on the other hand, is a luxury hotel in Llucmajor that you can only get into by booking a table.

Plaza de España in Palma (Plaça d'Espanya in Catalan) is where almost everyone getting round Mallorca without a car passes through. Under the Ses Estacions park lies the Intermodal station, where TIB buses leave for the whole island, along with trains to Inca, Sa Pobla and Manacor and the metro; right next to it the Sóller train sets off. It isn't a square for spending the afternoon: it's a square for catching something.

Don't confuse the square with Cap Rocat, which has nothing to do with it: it's a fortress turned luxury hotel at the far end of the bay, in Llucmajor. Below we tell you how to see it.

What Plaza de España in Palma is

If you're looking for the main square of the old town, that's Plaça Major; the town hall is on Plaça de Cort. Plaza de España, on the northern edge of the centre, works as a station.

It only fills up for a party on the night of 19 January, the eve of Sant Sebastià, Palma's patron saint, with a concert stage.

Palma Intermodal station: what leaves from here

The Intermodal is underground, below Plaça d'Espanya, and opens every day from 05:30 to 01:30. It has a transport information point, toilets, cafés, a supermarket and left luggage, very handy on the day you check out of your hotel and your flight leaves late.

At street level, the EMT stop "Pl. d'Espanya – Estació Intermodal" is used by lines including the A1 (airport), 1 (cruise port), 4, 23, 25 and 35. Timetables and lines on the TIB website: https://www.tib.org/es/red-de-transportes/estacion-intermodal-palma.

With the Intermodal as your base, the easiest car-free trips start here: Valldemossa and Deià, the Caves of Drach or the rest of the day trips from Palma.

How to use the Intermodal without wasting time

How to catch a TIB bus or train from the Intermodal

  1. Pay by contactless bank card: it's the cheapest fare for a visitor (by card, €1.80 to €5.40 per person depending on distance, against considerably higher cash fares).
  2. Up to 5 people can travel on the same card: tap the card once per person as you board; from the second traveller onwards they pay less.
  3. Tap out when you get off too. If you don't, you're charged a €0.30 penalty per person.
  4. In cash, the driver only accepts notes up to €20 and there are no transfers. For trains and the metro there are machines and ticket desks in the Intermodal.

The Sóller train: the station next door

The Sóller train leaves from its own station, next to the square. It's a private company outside the TIB system: tickets are bought at its own ticket office, not at the Intermodal.

  • Prices: Palma–Sóller €23 single, €30 return; train + tram to Port de Sóller and back, €40.
  • Departures from Palma: 10:10, 10:50, 12:15, 13:30, 15:10, 18:30 (check at the ticket office) and 19:40. The journey takes an hour.
  • Buying: only the train + tram package is sold online (sometimes on offer at €32); everything else at the ticket office on the day. No refunds; arrive 30 minutes early.

If you're driving, the trick is not to go to Plaza de España at all: board at Son Sardina, which has a free park-and-ride and where the train passes about 5 minutes later. Official timetables and prices at https://trendesoller.com/. More in our guide to the Sóller train and in our Ferrocarril de Sóller review.

How to get to Plaza de España in Palma

  • From the airport: EMT bus A1, about 20 minutes to the Pl. d'Espanya – Estació Intermodal stop. It costs €5 in cash or by card and runs every 12–15 minutes during the day. All of it in airport transfers.
  • From the cruise port: EMT 1, every 20–25 minutes, €2 in cash. See the cruise port guide.
  • By car: best not. The square is on the edge of the low-emission zone and the blue parking zone in the centre allows 2 hours at most. Leave the car at a free park-and-ride such as Son Sardina or Son Fuster and come in by metro or train to the Intermodal.

Cap Rocat: a fortress that is now a hotel in Llucmajor

Cap Rocat is a fortress built to guard the Bay of Palma, on Cap d'Enderrocat in Cala Blava. It's in Llucmajor, beyond S'Arenal, at the south-eastern end of the bay, a long way from central Palma. A curiosity: the fortress was never actually used for the purpose it was built for.

Today it's a luxury hotel restored by the architect Antonio Obrador, listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural (a protected heritage site) in the national monument category, within a 30-hectare protected natural area with 2 km of coastline. Its courtyards and rooms are for guests only: there's no admission and no tourist visit. The hotel opens roughly from mid-March to mid-November.

Free-flow driving time calculated with OSRM on OpenStreetMap. In summer and at rush hour allow 20–30 % more, plus time to park.

To get there, the practical option is a car or a taxi: the address is Ctra. d'Enderrocat s/n, Cala Blava.

How to see Cap Rocat without staying there

Book a table. Both restaurants take online bookings, and non-resident travellers have eaten at the Sea Club; confirm it when you book.

  • Sea Club: Mallorcan cooking with a wood-fired oven by the sea. In high season it opens at lunchtime (13:00–15:30) and in the evening (19:00–22:30). Bookings: https://caprocat.com/en/sea-club/
  • La Fortaleza: fine dining from chef Víctor García; in summer you dine on the fortress roof, in a pavilion recreating an old seaplane hangar. From June to mid-September it opens Tuesday to Saturday, 19:30 to 22:00. Bookings: https://caprocat.com/en/la-fortaleza-restaurant/

From the sea. The cheapest way to see the fortress is from a boat. The catamarans leaving from Palma's pier opposite the Auditòrium cross the bay towards the Llucmajor coast and anchor at Cova Verda, Cap Rocat, Cala Vella or Cala Blava. Magic Catamarans' Bahía de Palma Plus (€74, maximum 35 passengers) makes a swim and aperitif stop off Cap Rocat. Compare options in Palma boat trips.
