Planning a stag do in Mallorca today looks nothing like the videos from ten years ago. The Balearic Islands passed a decree against excess tourism that applies in Magaluf, Playa de Palma and S'Arenal, the areas groups usually head for. It bans organised bar crawls, open bars, happy hours and party boats that pick people up from those beaches. The decree is in force until 31 December 2027.

The good news: almost everything that makes a stag or hen party fun is still legal if you know where to book it. The boat leaves from Palma, jet skis and buggies work just the same, and the Magaluf night still exists, with different rules. This guide works just as well for hen parties.

What is banned, and where

The special rules only apply in four marked-out zones: Magaluf (Punta Ballena and nearby streets, plus Magaluf's seafront promenade, in the municipality of Calvià), Playa de Palma, S'Arenal (Llucmajor) and Sant Antoni, in Ibiza. Palma city centre, Santa Catalina and Palma's Passeig Marítim are outside them.

What the group can book

  • A party boat leaving from the port of Palma
  • Catamarans, guided jet skis, buggies and quads
  • Adults-only dinner shows in Magaluf
  • A restaurant menu with up to three alcoholic drinks per person inside the zones
  • Drinks in licensed bars and terraces, paid for one at a time

What is not legal in the zones

  • Pub crawls: organising, selling or advertising them
  • Open bars, happy hours, 2-for-1 deals and free drinks
  • Party boats that pick up or drop off the group in Magaluf, Playa de Palma or S'Arenal
  • Drinking in the street or on the beach: fines of €500 to €1,500
  • Buying alcohol in shops from 21:30 to 08:00

One rule applies across the Balearics, not only in the zones: balconing (jumping from or between hotel balconies) is banned, and the hotel is obliged to evict anyone who does it. On a stag do, that means losing your room halfway through the trip.

Party boat for stag and hen dos: it leaves from Palma

This is where most groups get it wrong. A boat with alcohol and music cannot pick up or drop off passengers in Magaluf, Playa de Palma or S'Arenal, nor come within one nautical mile of their coast. For the company, breaking this is a very serious offence, with fines of €60,001 to €600,000. Calvià has already fined one company €161,000 for boarding around 130 people, at €45 a head, from a jetty in Magaluf.

If someone on Magaluf beach sells you a "boat party" that boards right there, be wary: a party boat cannot board there.

Legal party boats leave from the Muelle de las Golondrinas, on Palma's Passeig Marítim, opposite the Auditòrium. The best known is the Barca Samba:

Trip Time Age Price from
Palma by Night 22:30–01:30 18+ €39.90
Sunset 19:00, 3 h 18+ €49.90
Sail Experience with buffet and DJ 14:30, 4 h aimed at adults check its website

They include pizza or a buffet and water; the bar is paid separately. It carries a maximum of 112 passengers, boarding closes five minutes before departure and latecomers lose their place. Fancy dress is not allowed, and stag and hen groups are specifically asked not to turn up in costume. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Read our Barca Samba review before booking.

Hen party on a boat: catamaran and sunset

For hen parties who would rather have something calmer than a dance floor, the usual format is a daytime catamaran with food and a swim, or a sunset on the bay. The luxury catamaran with meal and DJ has more than 3,600 reviews and starts from €85; the sunset boat with music, from €44.91, has more than 3,400 reviews.

There are more ideas in sunset cruises and boat trips, and if the plan is for the couple after the wedding, in Palma for couples.

Daytime stag do activities: jet skis, buggies and quads

Jet skis. Trips "in Palma" leave from Club Nàutic Cala Gamba or S'Arenal. Without a licence you can only ride in a buoyed circuit or on a guided tour with an instructor: that is what the platforms sell, such as the Los Deltas jet ski tour (1 hour, from €169) or the jet ski to the cathedral (30 minutes, from €99). Hiring a speedboat without a skipper is no longer an option without a licence: since 1 October 2026 you need a nautical qualification. Everything in jet skis and speedboats.

Buggies. They leave from Son Oms, next to the airport. The driver must be 21 and carry the original licence; the 3-hour buggy tour costs from €240 per buggy, not per person, so it works out reasonable for a group.

Quads. They leave from El Arenal and the minimum driving age is 18, with a full physical licence: provisional licences, photos and copies are not accepted. If the group is staying in Magaluf, there is a quad tour from Magaluf from €56. More in buggy and quad.

Stag and hen nights in Magaluf and Palma

Magaluf (Calvià) keeps its nightlife, with clubs such as BCM in the Punta Ballena area, but inside the regulated zone: every drink at its own price, no organised bar crawls and no drinking in the street. For a legal dinner and party, the Pirates group has two adults-only shows: Pirates Reloaded and Gringos, a bingo-and-party night for over-18s sold from €49.99. TIB 104 from Palma stops next to the Pirates venue, on Camí de Sa Porrassa.

Palma is the city alternative: dinner in Santa Catalina, flamenco at Tablao Flamenco Alma (shows at 17:30, 19:30 and 21:30, one hour, with a drink or a drink and tapas) and then the clubs on the Passeig Marítim. Tito's no longer exists: the building has reopened as Fitz Mallorca, and MarSalada works as a club at night at Club de Mar. The zones decree does not apply in Palma, but the city's civic bylaw also bans drinking in the street and caps guided groups at 20 people. Everything in Palma nightlife.

Playa de Palma, the "Ballermann" of German groups, has the same restrictions as Magaluf. Megapark closes its season in mid-October.

Fines in Magaluf and Calvià that wreck the budget

On top of the €500 to €1,500 for drinking in the street inside the zone, Calvià has its own public-behaviour bylaw. The latest amounts the council published in its civic campaign were these (they may have been updated):

Behaviour Fine
Shouting, fighting or bothering people €400
Walking naked in the street €400
Littering the street €200

Paying on the spot came with a 50% discount, but any fine eats a whole night's money. Wearing fancy dress in the street is not fined; taking your clothes off is. And remember the boats themselves (Barca Samba, Oasis) do not allow fancy dress on board.

Getting around as a group

  • Palma ↔ Magaluf: TIB 104 from the Estació Intermodal (Plaça d'Espanya), roughly every 15 minutes, about 30–35 minutes. From Magaluf there are departures until after midnight; check the last one from Palma on tib.org, because it changes by season.
  • Palma ↔ Playa de Palma: EMT 25 from Plaça de la Reina, roughly every 10 minutes, until almost 02:00.
  • To the boat: the Muelle de las Golondrinas is on the Passeig Marítim; from Magaluf, take the 104 to Palma with time to spare, because boarding closes five minutes before departure.

If you are coming from the airport, buses and taxis are covered in airport transfers; and for the hangover days, calmer ideas in things to do in Palma and beaches.

Can you have a boat party in Magaluf?

Not from Magaluf: party boats with alcohol and music cannot pick up or drop off customers in Magaluf, Playa de Palma or S'Arenal, nor come within one mile of their coast. They leave from the Muelle de las Golondrinas, in Palma.

Are pub crawls legal in Magaluf?

No. In the Magaluf, Playa de Palma and S'Arenal zones it is banned to organise, advertise or sell bar crawls, and open bars and happy hours are banned too.

How much is the fine for drinking in the street in Mallorca?

In the Magaluf, Playa de Palma and S'Arenal zones, €500 to €1,500. In Palma the civic bylaw bans it as well. Licensed terraces are the exception.

What to do on a hen party in Mallorca?

A daytime catamaran or a sunset boat from Palma, flamenco at Tablao Alma, an adults-only dinner show in Magaluf and clubs on the Passeig Marítim. Tell the boat you are a hen party.

Do Palma's boats accept stag and hen parties?

Yes, with conditions: Barca Samba asks you not to come in fancy dress and Oasis does not accept stag or hen parties that were not announced when booking.

How old do you have to be for a buggy or quad?

To drive the buggy, 21 with the original licence; for the quad, 18 with a full physical licence.
