Viator in Palma de Mallorca: reviews, cancellation and alternatives

Viator, Tripadvisor's excursions platform, is legit and well rated, but some activities are sold with no refunds and the complaints point to coordination with the operators. In Palma, always compare with the operator's website and with other platforms.

Viator is Tripadvisor's tours and activities platform: you book and pay there, but another company runs the trip. If you are reading Viator reviews and wondering whether it is legit for booking in Palma, here is our verdict: yes, with a high Trustpilot score, but check two things before you pay: whether the activity is final sale, with no refund, and who the real operator is. We do not sell Viator products on this guide, so we explain how it works and what to compare it with.

What Viator is and who is behind it

The company is Viator, Inc., a US company that describes itself as "a Tripadvisor company", with its legal representative for the EU in Dublin. Tripadvisor still owns it. It has agreed to sell TheFork to American Express to focus even more on experiences through Viator, and some investors have called for Viator to be spun off or sold. So far nothing of the kind has been announced.

Like the other platforms, Viator is an intermediary: the boat, guide or coach belongs to a local operator. Many of the companies you see in Palma sell the same excursion on several platforms and on their own website, sometimes at different prices.

What Viator sells in Palma

Viator resells tours and excursions in Mallorca, including transfers to the Drach caves from Palma. We have not been able to check how many products it has in Palma or their prices, so we give you no figures. We do not link Viator products on this guide: we work with GetYourGuide, Tiqets and Headout.

What is useful is knowing what price anything you find ought to have. These are Palma reference prices we have checked:

Activity Direct price On platforms
Cathedral (cathedral + sacred art museum) €10 official website €11 GYG and Tiqets, €15 Headout
Bay of Palma catamaran, 5 h (Magic Catamarans) €59 €59 GYG
Dolphins 3 h (Palma Cruises) €49.50 online, €55 at the pier €55 GYG
Marco Polo city boat, 55 min (Sa Calma Boats) €19 —
Drach from Palma, with coach (Nofrills) €54 €54 GYG, €48.60 Headout
Sóller train + tram + boat to Sa Calobra €65 €65 GYG and Tiqets

If a Viator listing is far off these figures, look up the operator's name and check its website before paying.

What travellers say

When we checked, Viator had 4.4 out of 5 on Trustpilot from about 332,000 reviews: 74% five-star and 11% one-star. It replies to about 80% of negative reviews within 24 hours.

The complaints repeat coordination failures with operators, hotel pick-ups that never come, same-day time changes, customer service that is hard to reach and refunds refused because "the provider has not approved it". The praise goes to the guides and how easy it is to book.

How to book and cancel on Viator

Viator's terms set these rules:

  • Standard policy: you can change or cancel up to 24 hours before the start. If the activity has no fixed start time, the deadline is 23:59 two days before.
  • "All Sales Final": these products are not refunded. Look for the label before paying.
  • Date change: free if you make it within the deadline.
  • Meeting point: if you do not get there on time, it counts as a no-show and there is no refund.
