GetYourGuide (GYG) is a German platform selling activities from thousands of providers: you book and pay on GYG, but another company runs the trip. If you are reading GetYourGuide reviews before booking in Palma, here is the verdict: it is legit and convenient, with simple cancellation, but compare it with the official ticket office and the operator's own website, because sometimes they are cheaper and sometimes they cost the same.

What GetYourGuide is and who is behind it

GetYourGuide was founded in Zurich in 2009 and is now headquartered in Berlin. The company you contract with from Europe is GetYourGuide Deutschland GmbH, registered in Berlin, which acts as intermediary and commercial agent for the providers. It is a privately held, venture-backed company (investors include SoftBank Vision Fund), it is already profitable and it has not been sold or merged.

What matters to you: GYG has no boats or guides of its own in Palma. Each excursion is run by another company, named on the listing; GYG handles the booking, the payment and the refund.

What GetYourGuide sells in Palma

It has the widest choice in Palma, in three main groups:

  • Tickets: Palma Cathedral from €11, Palma Aquarium from €30.50, the Almudaina, the Gènova caves, Fundació Miró, the Rafa Nadal Museum, Marineland and the water parks.
  • Boats: the 5-hour bay catamaran with lunch and a swim, sunset trips, jet skis and dolphin trips. They are compared side by side in boat trips.
  • Day trips: the island tour by boat, train and tram, the Sóller train or the Drach caves with transfer from Palma.

Prices: GetYourGuide against the ticket office and other platforms

The useful question is not whether GYG is expensive, but whether it costs more than the specific alternative. In Palma it varies:

Product GetYourGuide Tiqets Headout Direct
Cathedral (cathedral + sacred art museum) €11 €11 €15 €10
Palau de l'Almudaina €11 €9.50 — €8
Palma Aquarium €30.50 €30.50 — €30.50
Drach from Palma, with coach €54 — €48.60 + fees €54 (Nofrills)
Bay of Palma catamaran, 5 h €59 — — €59 (Magic Catamarans)
Western Water Park €38 €38 €38 €36
Katmandu Park €33 €33 €33 €31
Rafa Nadal Museum €20 €25 €20 €20

"From" prices per adult. The honest summary: on boats and excursions with transfers, GYG usually charges the same as the operator. For monuments and parks, the official ticket office is one to three euros cheaper (check the cathedral price on catedraldemallorca.org). And the Almudaina goes further: EU and Ibero-American citizens get in free on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons, so paying €11 at those times makes no sense.

Where GYG loses: Drach from Palma costs €54, the same as booking direct with Nofrills, and Headout advertises it from €48.60 plus its booking fee. If you go on your own on the TIB 401 bus, the ticket alone costs €18.50 on the caves' official website.

What travellers say

When we checked, GetYourGuide had 3.9 out of 5 on Trustpilot from about 56,600 reviews: 68% five-star and 19% one-star. It replies to 97% of negative reviews. It is the lowest score of the big platforms: Tiqets has 4.3 and Headout and Viator 4.4.

The complaints repeat the same themes: cancellations or overbooking by the provider, unclear meeting points or change notices that never arrive, unexpected charges and problems with digital tickets. The praise focuses on the guides and how easy the app is to use.

In Palma, the score on each listing is more useful: the bay catamaran has 4.6 from more than 12,000 reviews and the cathedral 4.6 from more than 17,000.

How to book and cancel on GetYourGuide

How to book without surprises

  1. Open the listing and find the provider's name; if it has its own website, compare the price.
  2. Check that listing's cancellation policy: the 24-hour rule is the general one, not the only one.
  3. If you choose "reserve now, pay later", make sure your card will still be valid and funded 72 h before the activity.
  4. Save the exact meeting point and the provider's phone number shown on the voucher.

The rules that matter:

  • Cancellation: by default, a full refund if you cancel more than 24 h in advance. Within those 24 h, or if you do not show up, there is no refund unless the listing says otherwise. The money goes back to the original payment method or, if you choose, as a GYG gift card.
  • Reserve now, pay later: card only. You pay nothing when booking and GYG charges the full amount 72 hours before the activity. If the charge fails, you have 47 hours to pay manually or the booking is cancelled automatically.
  • Bad weather: if the provider cancels because of sea conditions, you get your money back. If you decide not to go, the normal rule applies.

Alternatives to GetYourGuide in Palma

  • Buying direct: for the cathedral, the Almudaina, the Aquarium or Drach it is usually the same price or cheaper. We explain it in Palma tickets and in our reviews of the official cathedral tickets and Palma Aquarium.
  • Tiqets: same prices as GYG for the cathedral and the Aquarium, cheaper for the Almudaina. Our Tiqets review.
  • Headout: more expensive for the cathedral, but advertises Drach from Palma and the Hams caves slightly cheaper, before its booking fee. Headout review.
  • Civitatis: the Spanish platform, with 4.5 on Trustpilot. Civitatis review.

FAQ

Is GetYourGuide legit?

Yes. It is a German company based in Berlin, founded in 2009, acting as intermediary between you and the provider. It has 3.9 out of 5 on Trustpilot from about 56,600 reviews, and complaints are usually about the provider rather than the payment.

Is GetYourGuide more expensive than buying direct?

It depends. On boats like the bay catamaran it charges the same as the operator (€59). For monuments it is usually slightly more: the cathedral costs €11 on GYG and €10 on the official website, and the Almudaina €11 against €8.

Can I cancel a GetYourGuide booking?

Yes, free of charge if you cancel more than 24 h in advance, unless the listing says otherwise. Within 24 h or if you do not show up, there is no refund.

When does GetYourGuide charge me if I reserve now and pay later?

72 hours before the activity, on the card you gave. If the charge fails, you have 47 hours to pay or the booking is cancelled.

What happens if the boat is cancelled because of bad weather?

If the provider cancels because of sea conditions, GetYourGuide refunds you.

GetYourGuide or Civitatis?

In Palma, GYG has more choice and Civitatis a better Trustpilot score (4.5 against 3.9). Boat prices usually match; compare the cancellation policy on each listing.
