Palma airport (PMI, Son Sant Joan) is about 7.5 km as the crow flies from the cathedral and has a single terminal: arrivals on floor 0 and departures on floor 2. To get from Palma airport to the city centre you have three real options: the A1 bus, a taxi or a pre-booked transfer. If you are heading to a beach resort (Magaluf, Santa Ponça, Alcúdia, Cala Millor), first check whether a direct TIB bus goes there, because in season there usually is one.

Our short advice: if you are travelling light and your hotel is in the centre, take the A1. If there are three or four of you with suitcases, a taxi costs almost the same per head and drops you at the door. A shared transfer pays off mainly for hotels far from Palma, where taxi fares climb fast.

Palma airport bus to the city centre: the A1

The A1 is an EMT city bus, run by Palma's municipal bus company. It leaves from floor 0 (arrivals) and its route into town is: Palau de Congressos, Porta des Camp, Gabriel Alomar, Plaça d'Espanya – Estació Intermodal, Avinguda Alemanya, ending at Passeig Mallorca – Jaume III, near Es Baluard. It takes about 25 minutes to the end of the line.

What many guides still get wrong: the A1 no longer runs along the Passeig Marítim or to the cruise port. If you are going to the port, get off at Passeig Mallorca or Plaça d'Espanya and change to line 1 (we explain it in cruise port).

How to catch the A1 from the terminal

  1. Go to floor 0 (arrivals) and follow the bus signs. The stops have moved before because of building works, so trust the signage.
  2. Pay by contactless bank card (cheaper) or €5 in cash. Bring small notes: the maximum change given is €10.
  3. For Plaça d'Espanya (train station and TIB buses), get off at "Pl. d'Espanya – Estació Intermodal". For the old town and Es Baluard, stay on to "Passeig Mallorca – Jaume III".
  4. To return to the airport, the A1 leaves Jaume III from 04:17 and takes about 30 minutes.

A1 timetable (autumn–winter timetable, from the airport): first departure 05:30; every 15 minutes Monday to Friday and every 12 minutes on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, from 07:00 until about 23:15; then every 20 minutes until 01:15, plus two night departures at 02:15 and 03:10. If your flight lands in the small hours, there is a bus: almost every guide says it stops at midnight, and it does not.

Fare: €5 in cash. By contactless bank card you pay less, and one card covers up to five people with a group discount. Under-5s travel free with an adult. A new fares bylaw has been initially approved that would bring the airport fare down to €4.50; until it takes effect, it is €5. Check it on emtpalma.cat.

Taxi from Palma airport to the city centre: the real price

In Mallorca there is no fixed fare from the airport to Palma: taxis are metered. The rank is on floor 0, outside arrivals; always use the signposted rank.

Item Tariff 1 (weekdays, daytime) Tariff 2 (nights, weekends and public holidays)
Flag fall €2.50 €2.85
Per kilometre €1.20 €1.35
Airport or port supplement €4.65 €4.65
Minimum from the airport €16.95 (includes flag fall, supplement and the first 7 km) —

There are supplements of €3 for 5–6 passengers, €6 for 7–8 and €4.75 on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. There is no legal luggage supplement and the driver must accept cards.

The maths: a 10 km daytime trip comes to about €20.55; to the old town allow €20–25. If your hotel is in Can Pastilla or Cala Estància, just a few kilometres away, you will normally pay only the minimum. Be wary of anyone offering a "fixed price" at the terminal: the meter is what is legal. Ask for a receipt if you may want to complain later. Official fares at mobipalma.mobi.

Uber, private hire and private transfers from the airport

Uber works in Mallorca, with private-hire cars and drivers (known as VTC). Bolt and Cabify do not operate on the island. Private-hire pick-up is on floor 0, outside the terminal, in the arrivals area. Besides Uber, AENA (the Spanish airports operator) lists chauffeur and coach companies such as Raicars, Salty Driver, Autocares Marqués, Roig Bus and Transfer Class.

A pre-booked private transfer makes sense in three cases: you land late with small children, you are going to a hotel far from Palma, or you want to know the full price before you land. For central Palma, with the meter at €20–25, it is rarely worth paying more.

Shared or private Palma airport transfers: which to book

Shared transfers are coaches that pick up several passengers and stop at several hotels. They are cheap, but the drop-offs make the journey longer. Private transfers take you straight there.

Bus from Palma airport to Magaluf, Santa Ponça, Alcúdia or Cala Millor

The beach resorts are served by TIB buses, the regional government's intercity network, leaving from floor 0 (arrivals). Watch the dates: two of the lines are summer-only.

Line Destinations When From the airport
A11 Portals Nous, Palmanova, Magaluf, Santa Ponça, Peguera, Camp de Mar All year 08:25, then every 35–40 min, last 00:05
A32 Inca, Sa Pobla, Alcúdia, Platja d'Alcúdia, Platja de Muro, Can Picafort Until 31 October From 07:55, every 50–60 min, last 00:05
A42 Manacor, Porto Cristo, S'Illot, Sa Coma, Cala Millor, Cala Bona Until 31 October From 07:40, last 23:55
A51 S'Arenal, Llucmajor, Campos All year Roughly hourly, 05:35–23:40
A33 / A43 Port d'Alcúdia via Inca / Manacor 1 November to late March Replace the A32 and A42 on shorter routes

From the airport to Magaluf the A11 takes about 35 minutes, and to Peguera about 55. It only carries passengers travelling to or from the airport: you cannot use it to get between Palmanova and Magaluf. If you land before 08:25, the first A11 has not left yet: take the A1 to Plaça d'Espanya and then the TIB 104 to Palmanova and Magaluf or the 103 to Santa Ponça.

Sa Coma to the airport? Until 31 October, on the A42. From November it is replaced by the A43 from Manacor on a shorter route: check the tib.org line list to see whether it works for you. The A32 is an express and only lets you board or alight for Inca or the airport.

How to pay on TIB: by contactless bank card, which is a good deal cheaper than cash (conditions on tib.org). Tap in when you board and again when you get off, or you are charged a €0.30 penalty per person. One card covers up to five people: tap it once per traveller. Cash fares only accept notes up to €20. There is no tourist travel card: the TIB and EMT cards are for residents. The whole system is explained in our review of public transport.

From Palma to Port de Pollença and other towns

There is no direct bus from the airport to Port de Pollença, Sóller, Valldemossa, Port d'Andratx, Cala d'Or or Santanyí. You always go via Palma: the A1 to Plaça d'Espanya (about 20 minutes) and then a TIB bus from the Estació Intermodal.

  • Port de Pollença: TIB 301, about 18 buses a day from 06:00 to 21:40, taking roughly 1 h 20 (for example, 09:25 → 10:45). Some early and late journeys require a change in Inca.
  • Valldemossa, Deià and Sóller: TIB 203. For Sóller there is also the historic train, paid separately: Sóller train.
  • Train and metro: trains to Inca, Sa Pobla and Manacor leave from the Intermodal.

If you are heading north, also read day trips.

Car hire at Palma airport

These firms have desks inside the terminal (floor 0, arrivals) and cars in the airport car park itself: Avis-Budget, Europcar, Goldcar, Hertz, OK Mobility, Record Go and Sixt. All other companies are off-airport and take you there by shuttle.

Left luggage, VIP lounges and fast track at Palma airport

  • Left luggage: run by Superskunk on floor 0, in the baggage reclaim hall. Drop-off 08:00–20:00, collection 07:00–20:00. Small cabin bag €10, medium or large €15; maximum 25 kg and 160 cm. Ask at the desk whether the price is per day.
  • VIP lounges: Valldemossa (floor 4), Llevant (module A), Mestral (module B) and Mediterranean (module C). The Formentor lounge (module D) is closed for refurbishment. There is a VIP lounge pass on sale, but with very few reviews so far; official prices are on AENA's VIP services portal.
  • Fast Lane (priority security): bought on AENA's VIP portal and valid for three months from purchase.

If you have hours to kill before your flight, Can Pastilla and Cala Estància are very close by; see Palma's beaches.
