The Palma to Sóller train is the most beautiful way across the Serra de Tramuntana: wooden carriages more than a century old, a single track, 13 tunnels and an hour's ride between the station on Plaça d'Espanya and the centre of Sóller. From there the tram rolls down to Port de Sóller in half an hour, and in season you can carry on by boat to Sa Calobra.

What hardly anyone tells you: the single train ticket is not sold online, the 10:10 is the train that fills up first, and tickets are non-refundable. Keep that in mind and the day works out nicely.

Palma to Sóller train timetable (and back)

The company publishes a single timetable, with seven departures from Palma and eight from Sóller. Every train takes about 60 minutes, and they pass each other at Bunyola, halfway along, because the line is single-track.

Times marked * are "check at the ticket office": ask when you buy your ticket whether they run that day. For a day trip, the easy plan is to leave at 10:10 or 10:50 and come back on the 17:15, 18:00 or 18:30. Always check the official timetable before you go, as the company changes it with the season.

Sóller train price: tickets and tram

The official fares are simple:

Journey Single Return
Palma – Sóller €23 €30
Palma – Bunyola €11 €19
Bunyola – Sóller €11 €19
Tram Sóller – Port de Sóller €10 —
Train + tram Palma – Port de Sóller – Palma — €40
Online combined offer (train + tram) — €32

Do the maths: a return train (€30) plus a return tram (€20) comes to €50. The ticket-office package costs €40 and the online offer €32. If you plan to go down to the port, the package always pays off, and the €32 one is the best buy of the day.

The railway's website does not publish a child or resident fare. If you are travelling with children, the only reduced price you will see is on the boat combinations, which have a fare for ages 6 to 11.

Soller train tickets: online or at the station

Here is the main catch: only the return train + tram package is sold online. Plain train tickets (single or return) are sold only at the station ticket office, on the day of travel. Don't look for them on any website, because they don't exist.

The €32 offer is online-only and only "on some trains": the company doesn't say which, so check which departures carry it when you book. The package fixes your outward and return trains; the tram, on the other hand, you can take at any time.

The rules worth knowing before you pay (official FAQs):

  • Arrive at the station 30 minutes before departure.
  • No refunds once the ticket has been issued.
  • You can change the date or time until 09:00 on the day of travel. If you wake up to rain, change it before then.
  • Bicycles and e-scooters are not allowed. Animals: guide dogs only, or pets in an approved carrier.

How to buy and board the train in Palma

  1. Head to Plaça d'Espanya. The Sóller train station is beside the square, separate from the Estació Intermodal used by TIB buses and the other trains.
  2. If you don't have the online package, go straight to the Sóller train ticket office: these tickets are not sold at the Intermodal.
  3. For the 10:10, join the queue with time to spare; it is the most popular train.
  4. If you have luggage (say, on the day you check out of your hotel), the Intermodal has left-luggage lockers.
  5. In Sóller the tram stops in front of the station; pay on board if you don't have the package.

The route: Palma to Sóller and the tram to the port

The line is 27.3 km long. After the outskirts of Palma and Bunyola, the train climbs into the mountains and crosses them through 13 tunnels, the longest almost 3 km, with the highest point at about 200 m. There is a first-class carriage with sofas.

The history matters too: the company was founded in 1905, the line opened on 16 April 1912 and was electrified in 1929. The tram from Sóller to the port opened on 4 October 1913 and was the first electric tram line on Mallorca.

The tram takes about 30 minutes from the door of Sóller station (on Sóller's own Plaça d'Espanya, which shares its name with Palma's) to Port de Sóller. It also stops on Avinguda Cristòfol Colom, by the market. In good weather ride in the open carriages, the "jardineras". Timetable: from Sóller to the port at 08:00, 09:00, 10:00 and 11:00, then every 30 minutes from 11:30 to 19:30, with a last tram at 20:35; from the port to Sóller at 08:30, 09:30, 10:25 and 11:30, then every 30 minutes from 12:00 to 20:00, with the last at 21:05.

If you stay a day in the area, Sóller has a market on Saturdays and Port de Sóller on Thursdays. And if you want to add Valldemossa and Deià, see the Valldemossa and Deià guide: it combines well with the train.

Train, tram and boat to Sa Calobra: the island tour

The star excursion combines the train to Sóller, the tram to the port and a Barcos Azules boat to Sa Calobra, the cove at the foot of the Torrent de Pareis gorge. There is no TIB bus to Sa Calobra: without a car, you can only get there by boat from Port de Sóller or on an organised tour.

The boat runs daily from 1 April to 31 October. It leaves Port de Sóller at 09:50, 11:20, 13:00 and 15:00, takes about an hour, and there are only two returns from Sa Calobra: 13:45 and 16:40. In November it runs only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The boat alone costs €35 return (10% less online until 20:00 the day before); see the boat timetable.

There are three ways to do it:

  • Independently, bought direct: the railway's commercial partner, tourmallorca.com, sells train + tram + boat for €65 (ages 6 to 11, €33; under-5s free). Train at 10:10 or 10:50, the 13:00 boat to Sa Calobra, boat back at 16:40 and return train at 18:30 or 19:30. It is the same price you will see on Tiqets and on GetYourGuide for the self-guided version.
  • Guided with pick-up: the direct guided version costs €78 and includes a coach from your area and the return via the Sa Calobra road (the "tie knot" hairpin, Gorg Blau, Lluc). Pick-ups in Palma, Illetes, Cala Major, Santa Ponça, Playa de Palma, Can Pastilla, El Arenal, Peguera and Magaluf; if you start with the train, the coach waits for you at the Son Reus halt on the outskirts of Palma.
  • GetYourGuide tours: similar tours with pick-up in the south start from €103 (4.4 from more than 4,500 reviews), and others with boat, train and bus from €99–110: you pay more than through the direct channel in exchange for the platform's cancellation policy.

My advice: if you only want Sóller and the port, go independently with the online package. If you want Sa Calobra, the €65 combo costs almost the same as buying separately and secures you the 13:00 boat, which is the realistic one given there are only two returns. If you are coming from the south and don't want to think about it, the €78 direct guided version is the cheapest with pick-up.

Getting to Palma's Sóller train station and where to park

Palma's station is next to Plaça d'Espanya, the city's transport hub. EMT bus line 1 runs there from the cruise port; from the airport, the A1 bus drops you on the same square.

If you are driving, don't go into the old town: there are ACIRE zones with cameras and a low-emission zone. The best option is to start at Son Sardina, one of the railway's own stations on the outskirts with a free park-and-ride car park. The train passes through about 5 minutes after leaving Palma, so you avoid parking in the centre and the queue at Plaça d'Espanya. If you land the same day, the airport transfers guide explains the A1, and the review of public transport sums up EMT, TIB and the trains.

Train there, bus back

If the last train is full or the times don't suit you, the TIB 204 bus runs back from Port de Sóller and Sóller to the Estació Intermodal through the Ma-11 tunnel: the quick, cheap way home. The TIB 203 takes the long, scenic road via Valldemossa and Deià. A very good combination: out on the 203, stopping in the villages, and back on the train from Sóller.

Tips for a smooth Sóller train day

  • The 10:10 is the busiest. Get there early or take the 10:50, which takes just as long.
  • Buy the €32 online package if the times suit you: it is the only way to reserve a seat and the cheapest ticket for train + tram.
  • No bikes: the train doesn't take them; the Sa Calobra boat does (€2 return).
  • Sa Calobra has only two return boats (13:45 and 16:40). If you miss them, there is no public-transport plan B.

To plan the rest of your week, see the day trips from Palma, the boat trips guide and the review of the Ferrocarril de Sóller company.
